Intrusion test bench for battery cells

A company in the automotive industry needed a safe and reproducible way to test the behavior of lithium-ion cells in the event of mechanical damage. The biggest challenge was to perform controlled intrusion tests with variable weights and defined drop heights while simultaneously controlling safety-critical risks such as thermal runaway, smoke and gas development, or possible explosions. In addition, no persons were allowed to be in the danger zone during the tests.
HAINZL developed an intrusion test bench based on a precisely guided drop tower for this purpose. The system enables reproducible drop tests with different intrusion bodies and weights as well as exact height adjustment. An automated retraction mechanism returns the test body to its starting position after the test. The result is a future-proof test solution that enables realistic intrusion tests to be carried out efficiently and in accordance with standards.
